Fordoun – what is happening on the farm this week …
The team have started their controlled burning. Done after the first few rainy days and the start of the spring rains (usually after about 20 mm has fallen) controlled burning is an important grass management tool. Out with the old and making way for the new.
Unwanted brush and weeds, moribund grass and invaders are cleared away and diversity is restored. Ticks and parasites are killed, cleaning up the camps for the new season. This is all part of the natural health of the highland sourveldt. The use of fire as a management tool varies throughout the country as it is related to the grass types and biomes.
The farm is also showing the first signs of spring with the early lambs bounding around like cotton balls.
The chickens are also happy that they days are warming up and if they can find a sheltered nook out of the chilly breeze they like to behave as they do in summer…. Scratching in a dust bath!
With the weather warming up it is definitely time to explore the midlands from the comfort of your base at Fordoun …..
