Fordoun … minimal carbon footprint …..

Posted on: June 28, 2017, in News

A buzz word used currently in media is your carbon footprint … and how to keep it to a minimum. Following this Fordoun believes in valuing our lifestyle by trying to live ‘greener’. One of the goals of Fordoun is that all processes form part of a sustainable natural cycle.

Part of this process is the making of the Dr Ndlovu products used in the spa and in the hotel.

Dr E Ndlovu has developed indigenous natural products based on traditional African remedies. Working at one with nature, the indigenous plants are grown wild on the farm. They are left to grow in the healthy air of the midlands with no involvement from management – just as nature intended! After being harvested by hand they are taken through to process for essential oils. This is a small set up on the farm run by Andrew and Bronwyn Bates. The products are manufactured and then used on the premises – absolutely NO carbon footprint in the essential oils.

The indigenous oils used mostly are the African Potato and the Wilde Dagga.

Wilde dagga is often seen growing in the South African grasslands. Growing abundantly and wild in the rocky outcrops. It flowers in autumn and is striking, showing off its structural bright orange cluster of flowers that spring out like a fountain from the stem. Wilde dagga has a very strong cultural connection with the indigenous South African people and is widely used to treat ailments and aid health and well-being.

African Potato has a bright yellow star-like flower, coming off long stalks and is seen in summer and comes from the deciduous perennial tuber underground. The African Potato is native to grasslands and woodlands in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland. The broad, slightly hairy leaves arranged in three distinct groups spreading outwards from the centre. It’s health benefits are many and varied from lowering blood pressure to treating acne and skin ailments.
