Fordoun farm …

Sometimes sheep lamb during the most adverse weather you can imagine. I find that freezing cold and wet weather brings on the lambs. The last cold snap did not disappoint with new lambs arriving on Fordoun.
However with the cold snap over and summer weather on its way, Fordoun is also having the last of the cattle calving this month with the new unsteady calves bounding around the camps. The first flushes of Spring have come and gone leaving behind babies to forge ahead.
The two new Oribi that were released onto the Crane Foundation reserve are settling in and establishing themselves. Oribi have a yellow / reddish / brownish coat, they are a smallish antelope at +- 60 cm tall with males having small thin straight horns about 10 cm long. They are traditionally grazers but do browse trees and shrubs occasionally. Their numbers are under threat due to the increase in agriculture and the growing populations. They are lovely antelope to spot during your outdoor adventure walking, running or cycling.
A duiker has decided that he also wants to share in the magic of Fordoun, and has taken to hanging around the hotel looking for attention and nibbling the new green shoots around the dam in front of the rooms, enjoying the security of the people and lights perhaps? I am not sure if he has a name yet, any suggestions ?
It will join the “resident 6” which currently nibble on pin-acorns at night in the Fordoun avenue. The acorns from the avenue sustain much wildlife and worth a peak at night to spot the residents…
See you at Fordoun …
